The NATO/Warsaw Divide essentially formed the boundary of what was known as the Iron Curtain, that is, the divide between democratic capitalist countries and authoritarian communist countries. This led to a tense border and a sense of a built in line that could and possibly might be added to as the countries engaged in geopolitical chess.
