The crusader's were successful in spreading the Religion and taking down all other religions, basically making a terror monarchy with Christianity. They made most Muslims scared of them so they surrendered from battle. They were unsuccessful because they didn't have a very good leader after the first 2 crusades', most leaders would die on the way or get killed by assians. With no one to lead these crusades they fell apart and didn't accomplish very much.
