Simple manipulation of the numerator:

[tex]\dfrac{x+2}{x+1} = \dfrac{(x+1)+1}{x+1} = \dfrac{x+1}{x+1} + \dfrac1{x+1}[/tex]

Then if x ≠ -1, the first term reduces to 1 :

[tex]\dfrac{x+2}{x+1} = 1 + \dfrac1{x+1}[/tex]

so that a = p = q = 1.
